Baltimore Orioles fans will hear young voices bringing back old memories when they turn on the radio to listen to games this season.
Maryland EXCELS partnered with the Orioles for the third year for the “Kids Call of the Game,” which lets kids have a chance to take over the broadcast booth and recreate famous play-by-play calls.
This year, 15 children who attend Maryland EXCELS quality-rated child care programs throughout the state traveled to the Orioles’ flagship CBS radio studio in Baltimore to record the segments.
With the help, enthusiasm, and patience of producer Gerry O’Brien, the children learned how to record the plays like a pro. Ranging in age from 4 to 13, some could read the prepared scripts themselves, while the younger ones had help from Mom, Dad, or another family member.
Gerry coached the young announcers as they reenacted the familiar plays encouraging them to get excited and have fun as he demonstrated how to enunciate and project.
One of the younger announcers listened intently to advice from both his mom and Gerry as he faced the microphone, practicing a few times and then watching intently when Gerry digitally spliced his final recording.
Then the 4-year-old’s eyes widened, smiling as he looked at his mom as he heard his voice from the speaker suspended from the studio ceiling:
“That’s a double play! Chris Davis is the winning pitcher!”
The children recorded 10 plays, with some of them working as a team. Some of this year’s classic calls include:
- Brooks Robinson’s final home run as an Oriole in 1977
- The last out of the first game played at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 1992
- The final call of the 17-inning game in 2012 in which Chris Davis was on the mound
Veteran Orioles’ broadcasters Jim Hunter and Joe Angel will contribute lead-ins for each recording, lending their professional polish and trademark Orioles flourish to enhance the children’s experience.
Listeners can hear the “Kids Call of the Game” on the Orioles Radio Network on Wednesdays and Sundays before game time throughout the rest of the regular season.
